• Operation with another guard

Place the guard at the intended location, and secure it there so that it cannot be
displaced. The guard must be strong enough to prevent injury to persons if the
decomposition vessel bursts.

Connecting the ignition cable to the remote ignition unit

The plugs on the ignition cable must only be connected to Remote Ignition
Unit AOD 1.2.

• Operation with Guard AOD 1.3

The Guard AOD 1.3 has an ignition cable 5 m long. Connect Guard AOD 1.3
with the Remote Ignition Unit AOD 1.2 by connecting the two plugs on the cable
to the sockets provided on the Remote Ignition Unit.

• Operation with another guard

Connect the Ignition Head to the Remote Ignition Unit AOD 1.2 by connecting
the two plugs on the ignition cable to the sockets provided on the Remote Igni-
tion Unit.

Setting-up, connecting, and switching on the Remote Ignition Unit
Position the Remote Ignition Unit so that while you are operating it you are protected
by the guard. The Remote Ignition Unit must be at least 2 metres from the guard.

Check that the voltage on the typeplate of the Remote Ignition Unit corresponds to
the mains supply you will be using. If the supply is correct, connect the mains lead to
it. Switch the Remote Ignition Unit on at the mains switch. When the unit is switched
on, the green signal lamp illuminates.

Initial use of the Decomposition Vessel AOD 1.1
The decomposition vessel is supplied closed. Before using it for the first time, un-
screw the ring nut and use the grip to remove the lid of the decomposition vessel
(see also the operating instructions for Decomposition Vessel AOD 1.1). Clean all
parts of the decomposition vessel with dilute nitric acid, and rinse them in distilled
water until all traces of acid have been removed.

Internal parts and the internal surfaces have a cloudy and partly stained appear-
ance. This condition is of great importance for the subsequent analysis. It indicates
catalytically-active surfaces, and must not be removed by brushing or using hard
tools. Wipe out and dry the decomposition vessel only with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Further information is given in the operating instructions for Decomposition Vessel
AOD 1.1.

Clean the active parts of the decomposition vessel before first using it by carrying
out two combustion runs, each with two benzoic acid tablets (1 g), as described in
the next Section "Carrying Out Decomposition Trials".
