Getting Started

Connecting Power and I/O

Using the drawings on the opposite side of this sheet, connect your DC Power Supply and
desired I/O points to your I/O devices.

Do not apply power to the MDrivePlus at this time.

Connecting RS-422/485 Communications

Install The Cable Drivers

This is a two part process, as two sets of drivers are installed: one for the cable, and one for
a Virtual COM Port (VCP). The drivers will function with Windows XP SP2 or above, or
Windows Vista.

Plug the USB end of the communications cable (see drawings, opposite side) into your
PC USB Port.
The Hardware Update Wizard will open, select “no, not at this time” and click next.
Select the option: Install from a specific location, click next.
Browse to the folder on the CD: \Cable_Drivers\MD_CC40x_000\, click next.
Click continue anyway on the Windows Logo Compatibility dialog.
Click finish. The Hardware Update dialog will open again to install the VCP drivers.
Repeat steps 2 - 6 above to complete the installation.

The COM Port the device is connected to will be listed in the Windows Device Manager,
which may be accessed by right-clicking the My Computer icon and selecting Properties.
Connect to the MDrivePlus

Plug the cable into the P2 connector of the MDrivePlus, you may apply power at this time.

Install IMS Terminal

IMS Terminal is an integrated ASCII Terminal Emulator and Program editor designed to
optimize programming and use of the MDrivePlus Motion Control. It is located on the CD
that came with your MDrivePlus and is also available for download on the IMS web site at
http://www.imshome.com.

Insert the CD into the CD or DVD drive on your PC. The CD will autostart.
Click the Software Button in the top-right navigation area.
Click the IMS Terminal link appropriate to your operating system.
Click SETUP in the Setup dialog box and follow the on-screen instructions.

Configure IMS Terminal

Open IMS Terminal by clicking Start>Programs>IMS Terminal>IMS Term. The
Program Edit Window (left) and Terminal Window (right) will be displayed.
On the Menu Bar click Edit / Preferences to open the Preferences dialog box.
Click on the Comm Settings tab to open the Comm Settings page.
Verify the COM Port setting is the same as the COM Port connected in the Windows
Device Manager. Click “OK”.
If you haven’t done so already, apply power to the MDrivePlus.
Click into the Terminal Window, key in “CTRL+C”. The MDrivePlus sign-on mes-
sage should appear:

“Copyright 2001-2006 by Intelligent Motion Systems, Inc.”

This verifies that you are communicating with the MDrivePlus, you may now begin to
program and exercise the device.

For your convenience, IMS Terminal loads several sample programs by default on startup.
These may be used for experimentation and as examples of MDrivePlus programming.
A complete listing of commands with usage examples may be found in the MCode Program-
ming and Software Reference, available on the CD or from the IMS web site.
