The metadata specification is derived from the work of the
video (mainly, but not exclusively lecture recordings; keep in mind that the specifications are supposed to cover
the breadth of academic video, including films) and to promote sharing and interoperability between members of
the Opencast Community and beyond by defining common elements, vocabulary and formats. As the scheme
does not fully determine the interpretation of the elements, federation may require additional mapping on the part
of adopters.
There are actually two schemes, one for item (individual resource, most often but not always part of a collection)
and one for the collection. The reason for this is that in academia, we often find series as a concept: Courses hold
various lectures, workshops feature sessions, conference have various talks. The two schemes are to cover both,
the individual items (episode) and the collection (series) separately, yet connected via the dcterms:IsPartOf for the
item).
Keep in mind an individual video (i.e. an item) doesn't have to belong to a collection, but if it doesn't, it doesn't
carry certain information (on the overall event it was part of), features (no RSS) and it will probably be hard to
make it part of a series at a later stage.
