Coupler Clamp (Optional)
An alternate direct method of energizing the conductor is with a coupler clamp.
This device can be used with the transmitter to apply the signal to the conductor
of conductors when they are selectively energized at the transmitter location.
When it can be used, the coupler clamp is a very accurate means for tracing and
identifying conductors because of its ability to keep signals away from interfer-
ing conductors.
The coupler clamp is a unique tool that generally enhances the separation of the
signal compared to conventional methods of energizing the trace conductor. The
coupler clamp is also the most effective method of isolating a conductor from in-
terfering conductors in the area of the search. It CANNOT be used on all tracing
applications. Since there is no grounding device in use with the coupler clamp,
the signal must be able to travel in both directions on the conductor. If the trace
point of attachment, the coupler clamp may not function. This “break” in the
continuity of the conductor creates an opening in the conductor loop that will not
allow an audio frequency signal to propagate.
