case it checks the second ranked fund, etc. However, if the top ranked fund is money
market it can be bought again. This is considered a defensive position because money
market funds can move to the top of the ranking when the entire market is in a major de-
cline.
Impact of Fund Distributions
The user needs to be aware of the impact of fund distributions on FastBreak. There is
usually at least a one day delay in adjusting the FastTrack data base for distributions.
Funds that have distributions can show significant drops on the Price chart until the dis-
tributions are included the next day. This drop in NAV can force FastBreak to make a
trade that isn’t accurate.
Note: Always use FastTrack to look at your funds before making a trade. If you see
something unusual, that could be a distribution or bad data, make sure you verify.
Harnsberger Strategy
The logic will always try to buy a top ranked fund that meets your buying criteria. The
fund sold must meet your minimum holding period value. This is very similar to setting
the Top % to zero percent. One difference is that if more than one fund can be sold on a
given day, the Harnsberger option will sell the weakest (as measured by Sell ranking)
fund. An H is placed in the Why Detail file column to indicate a Harnsberger sell.
A user can also use the Top% value to generate a sell signal. This allows currently held
funds to be sold, either by dropping out of the normal Top% of the fund family or by a
new fund reaching the top ranked buy positions.
Note: In all cases, a fund being sold must have exceeded its minimum hold period.
When the Harnsberger strategy holds several funds, the fund sold may be the next
weakest ranked fund. This is because the weakest fund has not exceeded the minimum
hold period.
The Harnsberger Strategy will sell a fund if any of the stop functions generate a sell.
Note: If a fund is sold because a stop was violated, then FastBreak will put proceeds
from that sell into money market until a new fund becomes the number one buy
ranked fund. This logic keeps cash available waiting for the next good buying oppor-
tunity.
Clarification on using Stops and Signal Files
In early versions of FastBreak, when a stop was hit the trade was always taken, even if the
same fund was repurchased. This could happen because the fund hitting the stop is still
the highest Buy ranked fund. This would show up in the detail listing as selling and then
buying the same fund. This was normally not a problem because it was not a frequent
