THX ™ T ECHNOLOGY AND Q UALITY A SSURANCE
Filmmaker George Lucas originally created THX ™ as a studio-reference
monitoring tool, and THX Ltd. is now recognized as the leading provider of
product and venue certification for the cinema and home entertainment
industries. THX
™ Surround EX ™ extends the 5.1-channel format by adding a
back surround channel matrixed from the left and right surround channels.
THX
™ Select ™ (for small- to medium-sized rooms) is a certification standard
that guarantees superior performance and ensures more faithful
reproduction of movies in the home, in line with the director’s and sound
mixer’s intentions. The latest version of THX
™ Select ™ ,THX ™ Select2 ™ ,
features extra THX listening modes, including THX Cinema,THX Music and
THX Games modes, as well as Adaptive Speaker Array (ASA) technology
for optimizing playback of multi-channel movies,
music and video games in the home.
D OLBY ® D IGITAL T ECHNOLOGIES
Dolby ® is recognized as the pioneer in multichannel audio reproduction.
Dolby ® Digital EX ™ creates six full-bandwidth channels from 5.1-channel
sources using a matrix decoder that derives three surround channels from
the two in the original recording. Dolby
® Pro Logic ® IIx transforms any
native stereo or 5.1 signal into a 6.1- or 7.1-channel output with Movie,
Music and Game modes that enable you to tailor your listening experience
to the source material. Game mode can deliver full-impact special effects
signals to the surround speakers. Dolby
® Virtual Speaker
and Dolby ® Headphone are virtual surround technologies.
DTS ® (D IGITAL T HEATER S YSTEMS )
T ECHNOLOGIES
DTS ® offers premium sound quality with optimal channel separation and
sound quality. Like Dolby ® Digital, standard DTS ® is a discrete 5.1-channel
system; however, it uses less compression. DTS ® Neo:6 derives 6-channel
sound from a stereo (2-channel) soundtrack (and DTS ® Neo:6 5.1 derives
5.1 channel sound). DTS offers two DTS ® -ES ™ (Extended Surround)
formats: DTS ® -ES ™ Discrete, which provides a 6.1-channel system with a
discrete back surround channel; and DTS ® -ES ™ Matrix, which provides a 6.1-
channel system with a matrix-encoded back surround channel. DTS ®
96/24 offers you the sound quality of the 96/24 master. This format can be
encoded on DVD-Video or in the
video zone of DVD-Audio, so it
can be played on all DVD players.
CinemaFILTER ™
The tonal balance of a film soundtrack can be edgy and bright when played
back over audio equipment in your home—this is because film soundtracks
are designed to be played back in large theatres, using commercial
equipment. Onkyo has developed its own solution that restores the correct
tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the
smaller environs of your home theatre.

We include these extremely effective digital-to-analog converters for all main
channels in our top receivers. They not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB,
they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to
ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio,
DVD-Video, Super Audio CD and audio CD.
M ULTI -Z ONE P LAYBACK T HROUGH P OWERED
Z ONE 2
Powered Zone 2 distributes multi-zone entertainment throughout your
home — or even on the outdoor deck and patio. With this function, you
can enjoy one input source in the main room and a different source in
another room through two different connection methods: using a receiver/
amplifier in Zone 2 or using only a pair of speakers in Zone 2. In the
former case, you can enjoy 7.1 surround sound in the main room and play
a different AV source (stereo) in Zone 2 (using a dedicated Zone 2 line
out). With the latter method, you can have 5.1 surround sound in the main
room and play a different audio source (stereo) in Zone 2. So, while the
main movie feature’s thrilling everyone in the living room,
you’re welcome to relax to your favorite music in your
own designated space.
C OLOR -C ODED S PEAKER T ERMINALS
These color-coded speaker terminals
take the guesswork out of matching
wires to the correct terminals. Simply
attach the color-coded label to the
speaker cable, and attach the cable to
the same-colored speaker terminal for
easy speaker connection.
C ROSSOVER A DJUSTMENT
Previously, crossover frequency was fixed at 80 Hz. With crossover
adjustment, you can set the frequency at 40/60/80/100/120/150 Hz or
40/60/70/80/90/100/120/150/200 Hz, depending on your receiver and
speakers’ bass playback ability. This lets you more accurately match the
performance characteristics of the subwoofer to your front speakers.
O NKYO ’ S M ICRO F IBER AND A DVANCED M ICRO
F IBER (A-OMF)
The original Onkyo Micro Fiber (OMF) speaker
cone utilizes a pure cotton weave to absorb
vibrations. Also, a thin yet rigid flexing
diaphragm enables an extremely fast and
accurate response. A new development,
A-OMF, incorporates a PEN (polyethylene
naphthalate) layer with a flexible cotton weave,
making cones even stronger and more resistant
to heat. Both cones achieve improved midrange
clarity and imaging for an astonishingly vivid,
natural sound.
