Glossary of Terms
GSM (Global System
for Mobiles) The most widely used and recognized network
standard for mobile and wireless communication.
GPRS (General Packet
Radio Services) A complement to GSM, this wireless service pro-
vides very high data rates and continuous Internet
connections.
POP3 Email The standard protocol for receiving and accessing
email through an Internet server.
SIM (Subscriber Iden-
tification Module) card A small card which fits into any GSM device to
transform it into ‘your' device. It will ring when your
unique phone number is dialed; calls made and
services used will be billed to your account.
SMS (Short Message
Service) Messages The messaging service that channels messages
through message centers to provide for immediate
handling and delivery of messages.
WAP (Wireless Appli-
cation Protocol) The standard of serving Internet content and Inter-
net services to a wireless device, such as a two-
way pager or a mobile telephone.
