The Triplett FireFly Rapid LAN Mapping
Tool is an innovation in mapping and
identification technology. A simple patent
pending concept leads to unparalleled
speed in ID’ing large numbers of unmarked
LAN cables during the installation phase of
large LAN systems. While the FireFly can be
used on any size LAN system,it saves the most
time for installers on systems exceeding
25 ports. The basic FireFly comes with
100 Remotes, or ‘Flies’, and is upgradeable to
use a limitless number of optional Flies.
Introduction
In addition to rapid mapping, the FireFly
includes a Reverse Polarity test, and a
Short/Continuity test. An included adapter
allows the FireFly to function
as a standalone Continuity tester.
While developed primarily for LAN systems,
the FireFly will work on any wiring that
terminates with RJ-45 connectors. Cables
with RJ-45 connectors, once seen mostly
in LAN applications, are becoming industry
standards for numerous other wiring
installations. Some examples include
Telephone, Alarm, Security, Video, Audio, and
even Lighting. As the uses continue to
expand, the FireFly stands ready to meet
the industries mapping and ID
requirements.
Installing / Replacing Battery:
Remove the single screw on the back
of the FireFly’s case. Carefully remove
the front panel and install / replace the
9 volt battery. Replace the front panel
and reinstall screw.
Note: Replace battery when LEDs becomes
dim or product operates erratically.
Startup
Initial Testing
The FireFly sends a test signal to a Fly to make
it flash. This is easily demonstrated by
plugging a Fly into the RJ-45 jack on the
FireFly. The FireFly detects the presence of the
Fly, flashing the green Remote Detected LED
on the FireFly, and the green LED in the Fly
itself. Although it can’t be easily
demonstrated, if the connection to the Fly is
reversed in polarity, the Fly will flash red
(The FireFly will continue to flash green, since
it still detects the presence of the Fly). If a Fly
is not connected to the FireFly, the green
LED will not flash. If the FireFly detects a Short
instead of a Fly, the red Short / Continuity LED
will turn on and a beeper will sound. An
adapter test lead is provided to allow the
FireFly to be used as a Continuity tester.
It is best to use the FireFly with 2 persons,
one in the IT room and one who will travel
to the location of each far end jack / plug.
They should be in communication with each
other, typically by cell phone or walkie talkies.
Logistics
Mapping Procedure
a) Terminate both ends of the wires/cables
with RJ-45 connectors.
b) In the IT room, attach the terminated
cables to a patch panel.
c) Install Flies in all jacks being used in the
panel
d) One person stays in the IT room and
observes the Flies.
e) The other person travels to each far end
location and connects the FireFly to the
RJ-45 there. He should see the green
Remote Detected LED flash on the FireFly.
The person in the IT room should
immediately see a Fly flashing green. Mark
the ends of the cable appropriately.
Remove the Fly from the panel to indicate
that that jack is done. If FireFly
does not flash the green LED, the cable is
defective or a Fly is not connected to this
cable. If the Fly flashes red, the cable is
connected to the FireFly, but the polarity
is reversed.
f) Move to next location and test, etc. etc.
Continuity Test
The FireFly can be used as a standalone
continuity tester. Simply plug the provided
alligator test lead into the FireFly’s RJ-45
connector, and connect the clips to the
item that will be tested for continuity. If
continuity is found, the FireFly’s red
Short / Continuity LED will light and
the beeper will sound.
