The ”Tone shaper”

Thank you for buying the TK-lizer, manufactured and hand-assembled in Sweden and
thoroughly tested before leaving the factory.

The TK-lizer is inspired of the Baxandall circuit from the 50’s. Dual three-band EQ with low
and high bands switchable between peak or shelf. It also has a high-pass filter with 12dB/oct
sloop, and of cource a level control for fine adjustments of the output level. To make the EQ
even more useful it’s also equipped with a M/S circuit. All controls are stepped for easy
repeatability.

The parameters:

Low freq: 28Hz, 48Hz, 72Hz, 132Hz, 195Hz, 255Hz, switchable between shelf or bell.
Mid freq: 400Hz, 630Hz, 870Hz, 1.3kHz, 2.4kHz, 7.2kHz. (picture shows 720Hz not 870Hz)
High freq: 4kHz, 7.2kHz, 12kHz, 16kHz, 20kHz, 25kHz, switchable between shelf or bell.
HPF freq: 25Hz, 30Hz, 35Hz, 40Hz, 45Hz, 100Hz*, 12dB / octave.
Boost/cut: -4dB, -3dB, -2dB, -1dB, -0.5dB, 0dB, +0.5dB, +1dB, +2dB, +3dB, +4dB.
Level: -4dB, -3dB, -2dB, -1dB, -0.5dB, 0dB, +0.5dB, +1dB, +2dB, +3dB, +4dB.
EQ in/out.
M/S in/out.
Switch for separate monitoring of the mid or side signal.

* The frequency for the 100Hz position can be change by the user with out any special tools.
This if other frequncies than 100Hz are prefered when mono-ing bass in M/S mode.
Inside the unit are two resistors for each HPF that sets the frequency. Resistors are placed in
sockets. 100Hz resistors are 2,8k ohm, for 200Hz use 1,4k ohm instead.

M/S mode:

When you select M/S mode the signal is splitted into M=mid ( L+R) and S=Side (L-R) before
the EQ, after the EQ the signal is decoded back to L and R again.
None of the center informnation as bass drum, bass and lead vocal is precent in the S
channel only panned signals as guitars, drums, keys etc. In M/S mode you can affect the M
and S signal separately.
By using the high pass filter in M/S mode you can affect the lower range in two ways.
1. HPF on M channel cuts the low energy in the signal. ( L and R)
2. HPF on S channel, frequncies below the selected frequency will be in mono, this was/is
used when cutting records and to get a more focused low range.

In M/S mode you can also use the level controls to alter the stereo images, more S channel
will widen the image and less S channel will reduce the stereo images.

To be able to hear better what you are doing in M/S mode you can use the M and S cue
switch to listening to the M channel or S channel alone. The cued signal will be feeded to both
channels then.
