Strong acidic or basic conditions: adjust pH (6.5-9.0) before
performing the test.
Bromide, iodide and cyanide give higher results.
Sulfide, sulfite and thiosulfate ions anticipate the color
change to orange-brown.
The chemicals contained in this test kit may be hazardous if
improperly handled. Read Health and Safety Data Sheets
before performing the test.

• Using the clean 1.0 ml syringe with tip, add exactly
1.0 mL of HI 3898-0 reagent to the cuvet.
• Cap the cuvet with the plastic stopper and shake
vigorously to mix.
• If the color of the solution turns orange-brown, then the
concentration of chloride ions in the sample is below
2000 ppm.
A direct COD measurement of the sample according to
the EPA method is possible.
If the color of the solution remains yellow, then the
concentration of chloride ions in the sample is above
2000 ppm. In this case, before running a COD test,
dilution of sample is required until the chloride
concentration drops below 2000 ppm.
• If the color of the solution turns orange-brown, then the
concentration of chloride ions in the sample is below
1000 ppm.
A direct COD measurement of the sample according to
the ISO method is possible.
If the color of the solution remains yellow, then the
concentration of chloride ions in the sample is above
1000 ppm. In this case, before running a COD test,
dilution of sample is required until the chloride
concentration drops below 1000 ppm.
