Latest bits from net mask must follow the above convention; thus a mask of 255.255.255.127
is not legal, whereas 255.255.255.128 is Ok.
For instance, a good configuration between a PC and a device is:
PC DEVICE
IP address 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.210
Mask 255.255.255.0 255.255.255.0
The IP address & Mask combination above allows for the connection of up to 254 devices on
the same subnet.
Example of a wrong configuration:
PC DEVICE
IP address 10 . 0.0 . 2 10 . 2.100 . 23
Mask 255.255.255.0 255.255.255.0
And a correct one, instead:
PC DEVICE
IP address 10.0.0.2 10.2.100.23
Mask 255.0.0.0 255.0.0.0
Two more wrong configuration examples:
PC DEVICE
IP address 10.0 .0. 2 192.168 .0. 100
Mask 255.255.255.0 255.255.255.0
