Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing
media
Water fog. Carbon dioxide (CO2). Dry chemical. Foam.
Unsuitable extinguishing
media
Do not use water jet as an extinguisher, as this will spread the fire.
Protection of firefighters
Protective equipment and
precautions for firefighters
Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.
Fire fighting
equipment/instructions
Use water spray to cool unopened containers. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water
until well after fire is out.
Hazardous combustion
products
Carbon oxides.
6. Accidental Release Measures
Personal precautions
Ensure adequate ventilation. Eliminate all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in
immediate area). Avoid contact with skin. See Section 8 of the MSDS for Personal Protective
Equipment.
Environmental precautions
Do not contaminate water. Contact local authorities in case of spillage to drain/aquatic
environment.
Methods for cleaning up
Remove sources of ignition. Beware of the explosion danger. Stop the flow of material, if this is
without risk. Dike the spilled material, where this is possible.
Small Spills: Absorb spillage with non-combustible, absorbent material.
Large Spills: Use a non-combustible material like vermiculite, sand or earth to soak up the product
and place into a container for later disposal.
7. Handling and Storage
Handling
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Provide adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with
eyes, skin, and clothing. Do not taste or swallow. Wash thoroughly after handling.
Storage
Do not handle or store near an open flame, heat or other sources of ignition. Protect against direct
sunlight. Store in tightly closed original container in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Keep
away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs. Store away from incompatible materials. Avoid
uncoated metal containers. Minimize exposure to air.
8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Occupational exposure limits
Canada. Ontario OELs. (Control of Exposure to Biological or Chemical Agents)
Value
Type
Components
TWA
Hexyl Acetate (142-92-7)
294 mg/m3
50 ppm
Engineering controls
Good general ventilation (typically 10 air changes per hour) should be used. Ventilation rates
should be matched to conditions. If applicable, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation,
or other engineering controls to maintain airborne levels below recommended exposure limits. If
exposure limits have not been established, maintain airborne levels to an acceptable level.
Personal protective equipment
Eye / face protection
Wear safety glasses with side shields (or goggles).
Skin protection
Wear chemical-resistant gloves, footwear and protective clothing appropriate for risk of exposure.
Contact glove manufacturer for specific information.
Respiratory protection
In case of inadequate ventilation use suitable respirator.
General hygiene
considerations
Always observe good personal hygiene measures, such as washing after handling the material
and before eating, drinking, and/or smoking. Routinely wash work clothing and protective
equipment to remove contaminants.
