Appendix D: Protocol Glossary
NTP (Network Time Protocol)
A protocol used to synchronize time on networked computers and equipment.
PAP (Password Authentication Protocol)
A method of user authentication in which the user name and password are transmitted over
a network and compared to a table of name-password pairs.
PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol)
A protocol for creating and running IP and other network protocols
over a serial link.
RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service)
An authentication and accounting protocol. Enables remote access servers to communicate
with a central server to authenticate dial-in users and their access permissions. A company
stores user profiles in a central database that all remote servers can share.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
A protocol that system administrators use to monitor networks and connected devices and
to respond to queries from other network hosts.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
TCP/IP protocol for sending email between servers.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
A protocol that provides authentication and encryption services between a web server and a
web browser.
SSH (Secure Shell)
A secure transport protocol based on public-key cryptography.
TACACS+ (Terminal Access Controller Access Control System)
A method of authentication used in UNIX networks. It allows a remote access server to
communicate with an authentication server to determine whether the user has access to the
network.
Telnet
A terminal protocol that provides an easy-to-use method of creating terminal connections to
a network host.
