STEP 2 Remove the sissy bar and/or saddlebags (if equipped) to expose the
studs and/or rear fender struts. PIC 1
STEP 3 Starting with the right side, remove the 2 OEM fender strut fasteners in
the locations shown in PIC 2.
STEP 4
For models without OEM saddlebags: Insert two of the
3/8”-16 X 1-1/8” button socket cap screws into two of the 3/8” flat
washers. Insert them through bottom holes of one of the mounting
brackets, through one of the Spacer Washers, then thread into the right
side strut. PIC 3 Leave finger tight for now. Repeat for the left side.
For models with OEM saddlebags: Insert two of the 5/16”-18 X 3/8”
studs through the bottom holes of one of the mounting brackets, through
one of the Spacer Washers, then thread into the right side strut. PIC 4
Leave finger tight for now. Repeat for the left side.
STEP 5
Install the Driver/Passenger Backrest to the Fixed Mounts by inserting
one of the supplied (with the backrest) 5/16”-18 X 7/8” countersunk
socket head cap screws through one of the supplied shoulder washers,
through the Fixed Mount and threading it to the Driver/Passenger
Backrest on each side. PIC 5 Torque to 15 FT/LBS. If these fasteners
are loosened or removed, see WARNING! below!
BOTH PIVOT/HINGE SCREWS MUST HAVE
THREADLOCK COMPOUND RE-APPLIED AND
RE-TORQUED ONCE REMOVED AFTER INITIAL
INSTALLATION. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN
UNINTENDED LOOSENING AND MAY CAUSE SERIOUS
INJURY OR DEATH. THE FEMALE THREADS IN THE
MULTI-PURPOSE BACKREST AND THE THREADS ON
THE REMOVED SCREWS WILL NEED TO BE CLEANED
TO REMOVE ANY THREADLOCKER RESIDUE BEFORE
RE-INSERTING. RE-APPLY LOCTITE® THREADLOCKER
BLUE 242® OR EQUIVALENT, AS SHOWN IN PIC 6,
RE-TORQUING TO 15 FT-LBS (20.3 NM) USING A
TORQUE WRENCH AND 3/16” ALLEN/HEX KEY
ATTACHMENT. LET CURE PER THE THREADLOCK
MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS AFTER
INSTALLATION. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO APPLY
THREADLOCKER, THEN ORDER A NEW SERVICE KIT,
(P/N 991660) WHICH WILL CONTAIN SCREWS WITH
BLUE THREADLOCK ADHESIVE PRE-APPLIED.
STEP 6
Tighten the fasteners from Step 4 securely. Install the saddlebags, if
equipped.
