LCD: This display shows programming
information and temperature readings.

Keypad: This membrane keypad controls the
SMP3 via the following buttons:-
“MODE” key: Changes the display to select the
plateau temperature and ramping rate.
“START” key: Starts the melting cycle.
“STOP” key: Stops the melting cycle.
“UP” key: Used in conjunction with the
«MODE» key to select the plateau temperature
and ramping rate. Also runs through the stored
temperature readings in conjunction with the
«STORE SAMPLE» keys.
“DOWN” key: Used in conjunction with the
«MODE» key to select the plateau temperature
and ramping rate.
“STORE SAMPLE 1 - 3” keys: Used to store
and recall up to eight temperature readings per
capillary tube.

Safety Advice Before Use
❖ The ventilation slots in the front of the unit

should not be sealed or obstructed.

❖ Never move or carry the unit while in

operation or when connected to the mains
electricity supply.

❖ The unit should be carried using both hands

with fingers under each side frame.

Operation

Make sure the mains lead is firmly connected in
the IEC socket located at the rear of the unit and
connect to the electricity supply. Switch the unit
ON at the mains On/Off switch on the back of
the instrument. When switched ON, a green light
on the front panel and the sample chamber will
illuminate.

The SMP3 prompts are multi language. To
select a different language to English; hold
down the «

» and «» keys simultaneously

then switch the unit ON at the mains. Select
either ENGLISH, ESPANOL, FRANCAIS,
DEUTSCH or ITALIANO using the «

» key.

When the required language is indicated
press «START».

The display will first show “

STUART SMP3”

followed by “

VERSION 3.0”. After a short pause,

the display will alternate between;

The temperature displayed is the current ambient.
The cooling pump can be heard. The plateau
temperature and post plateau ramping rate may
now be set.

Selecting the plateau temperature
& ramping rate

Press the «MODE» key. The display will change
to:

Use the «

» and «» keys to select the desired

plateau temperature (usually about 10°C below
the approximate melting point).

If «MODE» is pressed again the screen will
change to:

Use the «

» and «» keys to select the required

ramping rate. Press «MODE» once more to
return to the “

COOLING TO AMBIENT” screen.

Melting point measurement
1. Place a small amount of sample in a capillary

tube and insert into the aluminium sample
block. Up to three tubes can be
accommodated at any one time.

2. Adjust the angle of viewing for maximum

comfort.

3. Select the required plateau temperature and

heating rate as described above.
