Buchneri
Mode of Action.
PSI
®
Buchneri is designed to provide 500,000 cfu per gram
of silage of Lactobacillus buchneri and 100,000 cfu per gram
of silage of Lactobacillus plantarum and
Pediococcus
acidilactici. The L. plantarum and P. acidilactici support a
rapid early acidification, and the L. buchneri provide aerobic
stability by converting a portion of the lactic acid into acetic
acid (Figure 1). A combination of acetic acid and
intermediates produced by the L. buchneri reduce the growth
of yeasts and other spoilage organisms.
Figure 1. Aerobic stability of PSI
®
Buchneri as reflected by
the acetic acid levels in corn silage exposed to air over time
versus an untreated control and a lower level of Buchneri.
Figure 2. Aerobic stability of PSI
®
Buchneri as
reflected by the change in pH of corn silage exposed to
air over time versus an untreated control and a lower
level of Buchneri.
When to use PSI
®
Buchneri.
Use when feed-out management could be improved:
a) Low feed-out rates
b) Difficult bunk face management
c) Crops prone to aerobic instability
d) Crops with higher than desire Dry Matter
e) High moisture corn
f) Corn silage
PSI
