48” Mower Drive Belt Replacement
1. Remove the mower deck. See Mower Removal and
Installation
2. Remove the screws securing both deck covers and
remove the covers.
3. Using a spring puller or a small rope loop, release the
idler assembly tension spring (A, Figure 55).
4. Remove the old belt.
5. Inspect all pulleys for wear or bearing damage.
6. Lubricate the idler arm pivot with multi-purpose lithi-
um grease and check for free movement (see LUBRI-
CATION).
7. Install the new drive belt as shown in the diagram in
Figure 54.
8. Check that the pulley stop (B, Figure 55) is properly
aligned. See PULLEY STOP ADJUSTMENT.
9. Complete installation by following steps 3-1 in
reverse order.

BATTERY CHARGING
A dead battery or one too weak to start the engine may
be the result of a defect in the charging system or other
electrical component. If there is any doubt about the
cause of the problem, see your dealer. If you need to
replace the battery, follow the steps under Cleaning the
Battery & Cables in the Regular Maintenance Section.
To charge the battery, follow the instructions provided by
the battery charger manufacturer as well as all warnings
included in the safety rules sections of this book. Charge
the battery until fully charged (until the specific gravity of
the electrolyte is 1.250 or higher and the electrolyte tem-
perature is at least 60° F). Do not charge at a rate high-
er than 10 amps.
WARNING
Keep open flames and sparks away from the
battery; the gasses coming from it are highly
explosive. Ventilate the battery well during
charging.
