STEP 2 VERIFICATION

1. Check the resistance of each mat and the sensor wire (Fig. 5) before proceeding with floor fin-

ishing to ensure no damage has occurred during installation. The resistance of the wire should

be greater than 10 ohms but less than 380 ohms. The resistance of the sensor wire should be

between 7 and 14 k-ohms. Compare these values to those recorded before installation.

2. Your local electrical inspector may require inspection of the mat installation, prior to proceeding

with the floor finishing.

STEP 3 APPLY BASE LAYER / SCRATCH LAYER / FLOORING

WARNING:

The heating cable must be completely embedded in cementituous mortar to prevent over-
heating. The mat support strands can be partially exposed. Self-leveling cement based
compounds appropriate for this product may be used for this procedure, but consult with
your electrical supply company and flooring supplier in advance.

1. Take care not to damage the heating cable. Use caution when setting heavy equipment or

materials (such as pails of mortar) on the mat.

2. Bond the mat to the subfloor by applying a thin mortar base layer, using the mesh areas only, using

" V-notched trowel. Firmly press the mat into the mortar and secure the perimeter using the

clips provided or hot melt glue (Figures 4f and 4g).

3. Cover the complete mat with a uniform “scratch coat” of mortar that just covers the heating

cables. The scratch coat should be level and extend over the entire floor area, including areas not
being warmed. Note that the mortar base layer and covering scratch coat can be applied at the
same time by spreading a small section of base layer, pressing in the mat and then scratch coat-
ing over that section – and continuing until complete. Care should be taken to correctly replace
cables and mat if they are raised to trowel base layer on floor.

4. The mat strands can be partially exposed. Once the scratch coat is dry, set the tiles in the usual

manner.
