Install Software and
Connect to Your Computer
The software works with Windows ® 98, Me, 2000, and XP, and Macintosh ®
OS 8.6 to 9.x and OS X 10.2 to 10.3.
Windows
1 Make sure the RX500 is not
connected to your computer,
then turn on your computer.
Note: If your RX500 is turned on
and connected, you may see
several New Hardware screens.
Click Cancel for each one and
disconnect the RX500. You can’t
install your software that way.
2 Insert the Epson CD-ROM in your
CD-ROM or DVD drive.
Note: With Windows XP, if you see a
message asking what you want
Windows to do, click Cancel.
3 When you see this screen, click
Install.
If this screen doesn’t open
automatically, double-click
My Computer (or click Start >
My Computer). Then double-click
the EPSON CD-ROM icon.
4 Read the license agreement and
click Agree to continue. The
computer installer copies files to
your computer.
5 When you see this screen, make
sure the RX500 is turned on, then
lift up the scanner.
6 Remove the yellow sticker and plug the square end of a USB cable into
the USB port on the RX500. Then route the cable in the slot as shown.
Caution: Make sure the USB cable fits securely into the slot. The USB
connector may snap if the cable is not routed correctly and the scanner
is closed with force.
7 Close the scanner carefully.
8 Plug the flat end of the cable into
any available USB port on your
computer. Several messages
appear on the screen. Wait for all
the screens to disappear.
Note: If the blue USB screen
doesn’t disappear, make sure the
RX500 is turned on and securely
connected to your computer.
9 When you see a message that you have successfully installed the
RX500 drivers, click Next.
10 Continue following the instructions on the screen to install the rest of
your software.
Note: Installation may take several minutes. Don’t cancel the
installation or start other programs.
11 When installation is finished, click Print Test Page to make sure your
software is installed correctly.
12 After the test page prints, click Exit.
13 Register your RX500 as instructed, then remove the CD-ROM.
Now you’re ready to copy, scan, and print. See “Any Questions?” to the right
to find out how.
Macintosh
1 Insert the Epson CD-ROM in your CD-ROM or DVD drive.
2 Mac ® OS X: Double-click the EPSON CD-ROM icon, then double-click
the EPSON OS X Installer icon.
Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x: Double-click the EPSON OS 8 and 9
Installer icon.
3 When you see this screen,
click Install.
4 Read the license agreement and
click Agree to continue.
5 Follow the instructions on the
screen to install the software. You
may need to enter your
administrator password.
Note: Installation may take several minutes. Don’t cancel the
installation or start other programs.
6 When prompted, restart your Macintosh. Then double-click your
EPSON CD-ROM icon, if necessary, and double-click your
installer icon to continue with installation.
7 When you see this screen, click
Install to finish installing your
software.

8 At the end of installation, click Exit.
9 Register your RX500 as instructed,
then remove the CD-ROM.
10 Make sure the RX500 is turned on, then
lift up the scanner.

If the red ! error light is on, check the messages on the RX500 LCD screen.

Glossy Photo Paper
A smooth, glossy finish for your everyday photos.
Choose Glossy on the LCD screen, and Glossy
Photo Paper as the Type or Media Type setting in
your printer software.
Borderless Premium Glossy Photo Paper
Heavyweight paper with a high gloss finish that lets
you create borderless photos with no perforated
edges. Choose Prem. Glossy on the LCD screen, or
Premium Glossy as the Type or Media Type setting
in your printer software.
Matte Paper Heavyweight
Perfect for high quality photo reprints and
enlargements. Choose Matte on the LCD screen, or
Matte Paper–Heavyweight as the Type or Media
Type setting in your printer software.
Need Paper and Ink?
Selecting the RX500 in Mac OS X
1 Open the OS X Applications folder,
then open the Utilities folder and
start Print Center or the Printer
Setup Utility.
Note: If you see a screen asking if
you’d like to add a printer, click Add.
2 On the next screen, select EPSON USB from the pull-down menu.
3 Click Stylus Photo RX500.
Note: If the RX500 doesn’t appear,
make sure it is turned on and
securely connected to your
Macintosh.
4 Open the Page Setup menu
at the bottom of the screen and
select All.
5 Click the Add button. The Printer List
includes two entries for your printer.
6 Close Print Center or the Printer
Setup Utility.
7 Now start up your Macintosh in OS 9.x. Follow the instructions in the
previous column to install the OS 9.x drivers and optional software for
Macintosh Classic programs.
Selecting the RX500 in Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x
1 Open the Chooser from the Apple menu.
2 Select the SP RX500 Series icon, then
select your USB port and turn on
background printing.
3 Close the Chooser.
Now you’re ready to copy, scan, and print.
See “Any Questions?” to the right to find out how.
A New Hardware Wizard
appears on your screen.
You see an error
message when you
print or scan.
The RX500 doesn’t
work.
Click Cancel and follow the steps in
section 8. Disconnect the RX500 before
installing the software.
Make sure your RX500 is connected to your
computer, plugged into a power source, and
turned on.
Try turning the printer off and then back on to
clear the error.
Unlock the printer by removing and storing the
orange plastic print head holder. See section 4.
Slide the transportation lock under the
lid to unlock the scanner. See section 2.
Make sure the ink cartridges are pushed
all the way down. See section 6.
Try connecting the USB cable to a different
USB port on your computer. See section 8.
If it still doesn’t work, try reinstalling the
software. See section 8.
