This guide will step you through retuning the StarFire™ receiver to track changed satellite assignments for the
StarFire Network via NavCom’s StarUtil program.
Problem - StarFire signals have been reassigned by INMARSAT as a result of circumstances impacting
INMARSAT’s business. As a result, some of the StarFire signals have moved to different satellites and all of
the signals have been assigned new frequencies. The changes and effective dates are shown in Table 1
below. However, these are subject to change as of this writing and a similar update will be provided should a
change be realized.
Resolution – Update the receiver to the current release, as defined in the table above. Current products updated
with the new firmware (version v3.0.12) will include an updated StarFire tracking table and an over-the-air
StarFire almanac feature which allows for automatic updating of the tracking table should any statellites or
almanac feature for frequency changes which might occur in the future. This feature, the added capability of
GLONASS in StarFire, the accuracy improvements to <5cm and futher planned improvements (don’t aske, we
can’t tell) are all good reasons to consider upgrading from the discontinued products to the current products.
The new software table was increased to handle up to 20 StarFire satellites. New software for discontinued
products contains an updated StarFire tracking table. The new software is available for download from an ftp
site. Requests for the ftp site link and/or additional information should be sent to our
center.
Alternatively, follow the directions below to manually tune to the new frequency.
In addtion to changes shown in the table of Satellite Assignments below, we are continuing to provide a signal
on the 15.5W satellite which would create a 7 satellite constellation. Current products with the new v3.0.12
software will automatically add the new seventh satellite to the tracking table via the over-the-air StarFire
almanac. Discontinued products will require the reciever be manually tuned to track the new seventh satellite
should the end-user choose to use this satellite. Table 1 below is updated from the Jan ’12 Troubleshooting
Guide release to reflect the current system frequencies and status.
To allow time to respond to the changes, all new frequencies and satellites are currently on the air with an
overlap period of both the old and new signals available as shown in the table below. This overlap period will
not be extended.
