ND5 XS Quick Start Guide

English

1 Installing and Connecting

• Stand the ND5 XS on an appropriate, stable surface. Make sure it is well ventilated.

• Check that the

mains

supply specified on the ND5 XS rear panel is appropriate for your territory.

Connect the ND5 XS to the mains using the supplied cable but do not switch it on until all other
connections have been made.

• Identify the

Signal Ground Switch

and select the “chassis” option unless the ND5 XS is connected

in a hi-fi system incorporating another earthed source component (all Naim CD players, for
example), or mains “hum” is audible through the loudspeakers when the ND5 XS is switched on.

• To play audio from a

UPnP

™ server or from internet radio stations, the ND5 XS

network socket

must be connected to a router using an Ethernet cable, or its

Wi-Fi Antenna

must be fitted.

Internet radio also requires a high-speed internet connection.

• If the ND5 XS

DAB/FM

module is fitted, a suitable aerial should be connected to the DAB/FM

aerial socket. The DAB/FM module cannot operate without an aerial. Contact your local Naim
retailer or distributor for advice on selecting and installing an aerial.

• If the ND5 XS is to play audio files stored on an

iPod, iPhone

or

USB

memory hardware, connect it,

using an appropriate cable if necessary, to the front panel USB socket.

• If any external S/PDIF digital audio sources are to be used with the ND5 XS, connect them, using

the appropriate BNC coaxial, phono coaxial or optical cables, to the

digital

inputs.

• Connect one of the ND5 XS outputs to an appropriate preamplifier or external DAC input. The ND5

XS DIN output is the default active analogue output. To select an alternative analogue output, press
the handset setup key ( ) once the ND5 XS is switched on and select

Analogue Outputs

. Select

Digital Output

to activate the digital output.

• ND5 XS control can be linked using

System Automation

to the control of some Naim preamplifiers,

CD players and the Naim DAC. System Automation enables for example, preamplifier inputs
to be selected via the ND5 XS, or for n-Stream transport functions to control a CD player. To
take advantage of System Automation, connect one of the ND5 XS

Remote Out

sockets to a

preamplifier, CD player or DAC

Remote In

socket. Use a cable terminated with a 3.5mm jack plug

at one end and a 3.5mm jack or phono plug as necessary at the other end.

Note:

ND5 XS System Automation is switched off by default. A full description of its use can be found in

the ND5 XS Reference Manual.
