About the GT 051 800

The GT 051 800 accepts a single hot-swappable FireWire drive, and makes it easy to take drives between

multiple computers. Older FireWire 400 GT Keys are forward-compatible with GT 051 FireWire 800 racks,

and FireWire 800 GT Keys are backward-compatible with all GT Series FireWire 400 enclosures. Compatibility

is maintained because both versions use the same hot-swap technology, Glyph’s Integrity™ FireWire inter-

face. This integrated exchange system offers true hard drive hot-swap technology, ensuring data integrity

and consistency: removing a hot-swap drive from a Glyph FireWire system interrupts the data signal at the

FireWire bus, not on the ATA or SATA bus as with other hot-swap systems.

Configuration

GT Key drive in the GT 051 800 shows up to the computer as any other FireWire drive would. The GT 051 800

can be rack mounted in a standard 19-inch rack with Glyph’s optional rack kits. There is a single kit ( part# GT-

RACKEAR) for mounting one drive, and a dual kit (part# GT-RACKEAR2) for mounting two drives. The dual kit

allows any two of Glyph’s GT Series tabletop drives to be mounted in a single rack space.

GT Keys

GT Keys lock into the GT 051 800 chassis by means of a flip-out handle at the front of the drive. The cartridge

loads on its side and the top is marked with a “This side up” label. GT Keys have power and activity indicator

lights. When you insert a GT Key into the GT 051 800, the power LED should illuminate solid and the activity

LED should blink when there is disk activity. The GT Key can be locked into the GT 051 chassis using the keys

that are included with each GT Key. When shipping your GT 051, remove the GT Key cartridge from the unit.

When transporting an individual cartridge, place it in the plastic carrying case that it came in. This will help

ensure the safety of the sensitive electronics at the back of the cartridge. Additional carrying cases can be

ordered for GT Key drives (part# GTKEY-CASE).

Power supplies and fans

The GT 051 includes an internal power supply and quiet internal fan. The power supply is rated at 100-240v

50-60Hz.

Ports

On the rear of the GT 051 800 there are two FireWire 800 ports. Officially, these IEEE 1394b ports run at up to

800Mbits/sec. One of these ports should be connected to your computer, and the other should be connect-

ed to other downstream FireWire devices. It doesn’t matter which port you connect to the computer, they

are functionally identical. If your computer has a FireWire 800 port you can use the provided FireWire 800 9-

pin cable. If your computer has a FireWire 400 port only, you can use a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 converter

cable, available from Glyph (part# CAB-FW800-9/6-2). If your computer doesn’t have any FireWire ports you

will need to purchase a FireWire adapter card. Check the Glyph web site for suggestions.
