Product Familiarisation
Unpacking and assembling your
sharpener
Carefully unpack your sharpener. Ensure all packaging materials are •
removed and fully familiarise yourself with all features of the product.
If any parts are damaged or missing, have these parts repaired or
•
replaced before use.
Before use
Position the sharpener on a level, and suitably sturdy surface. •
Always wear suitable personal protective equipment for the job that you •
are to do.
Use of this machine requires safety goggles and gloves.
•
NOTE: This machine is suitable for sharpening standard carbon steel and
HSS spiral drill bits. Attempting to sharpen any other type of drill bit will
cause permanent damage, and may invalidate your warranty.
Operating instructions
Switching on
NOTE: Do not switch the sharpener on or off when under load. Always allow
the motor to reach its full speed before use.
To start the sharpener, push the side of the on/off switch (1) marked “1”. •
To stop the sharpener, push the side of the on/off switch (1) marked “0”. •
Sharpening
1) Ensure that the drill bit to be sharpened is clean, and free from damage.
2) Select a drill guide hole (4) just larger than the drill bit itself.
3) Switch the sharpener on, and allow motor to reach full speed
4) Place the drill bit into the guide hole with the cutting end downwards.
Apply a light downwards pressure on the bit, whilst rotating through
approx 20˚ back and forth. Repeat for 10-20 seconds.
5) To achieve a sharp edge, keep the drill bit moving all the time that it is in
contact with the grinding wheel.
6) Lift the drill bit out of the guide hole, one cutting edge should be
sharpened.
NOTE: The drill bit will become very hot as it is ground, do not touch the tip.
7) Rotate the drill bit by 180˚ and repeat steps 4 and 5.
8) Lift the drill bit out of the guide hole. Both cutting edges of the drill bit tip
should be evenly ground, and sharp.
Grinding wheel adjustment
The height of the grinding wheel can be adjusted to allow for wear, and •
drill bit length.
To raise the grinding wheel, rotate the grinding wheel adjustment knob
•
(3) clockwise. This will allow you to sharpen drill bits more rapidly. Do not
allow the grinding wheel to contact the machine casing.
To lower the grinding wheel, rotate the grinding wheel adjustment knob
•
(3) anticlockwise. This will result in a finer ground cutting edge.
Sharpening tips
If overheated, the tip of the drill bit will turn blue. If this is •
happening, reduce the pressure on the drill bit or occasionally cool the
bit in clean water.
If the sharpened drill bit appears to be “off centre” or wobbles when •
used, it has been ground unevenly. Inspect the cutting edges at the tip, if
one cutting edge is shorter it requires more grinding.
Maintenance
WARNING: Always disconnect the sharpener from the mains power supply
before performing any maintenance or cleaning.
Grinding wheel replacement
Over time, the grinding wheel will wear, and may develop grooves or •
ridges.
For optimum sharpening, a worn grinding wheel should always be
•
replaced.
To access the grinding wheel, remove the two cover screws (2) and lift
•
off the top part of the casing.
The grinding wheel can now be lifted out and replaced. Always replace
•
with another grinding wheel of the same pattern as that originally fitted.
Always replace all parts of the casing, and tighten the cover screws (2)
•
securely.
Cleaning
During use dust and metallic particles may accumulate on the machine. •
Always clean dust and particles away, and never allow ventilation holes
to become blocked.
Use a soft brush, or dry cloth to clean the machine. If available, blow
•
through the ventilation holes with clean and dry compressed air.
Disposal
Do not dispose of power tools, or other waste electrical and electronic •
equipment, with household waste.
Contact your local waste disposal authority for information on the proper
•
way to dispose of tools.
