96 kHz/48 kHz Selectable Digital Output
While most DVD players downconvert 96/24 audio to 48 kHz and 20 bits for
their digital outputs, the DV-S555 is one of the few mainstream DVD players
that can provide a true 96 kHz/24-bit PCM digital audio bitstream through
either its digital coaxial or optical TosLink connection, making it ideally suited to
Onkyo’s TX-DS696, TX-DS595 and TX-DS494 receivers—which, unlike older
receivers, accept 96 kHz bitstreams. If you select the 48 kHz output in the
set-up menu, then any DVD audio track containing a 96 kHz signal will be
downconverted to 48 kHz by the DV-S555 for backwards compatibility with
older components.
Exclusive Direct Digital Path
Unlike other DVD players that use PC-board copper traces to transfer the digital
audio signal, the DV-S555 employs a high-purity, heavy-gauge, shielded cable
to directly output the 96 kHz/24-bit digital bitstream straight from the disc to
the back panel. The result is a noise-free digital audio signal that is less
susceptible to flux.
Outstanding Disc Compatibility
While all DVD players can play CDs, the DV-S555 can also play both CD-Rs
(write-once) and CD-RWs (rewritable), as well as CDs that hold MP3-coded files.
MP3 Playback
Instead of using your small computer speakers, you can play over your home-
theater system the MP3 files you downloaded from the Internet and other
sources—up to 10 hours or more of music on a single disc, depending on the
bit rate of the MP3 files. The DV-S555 will display the MP3 filenames on your
TV screen, and you can program a playlist of up to 24 songs from the same disc.
State of the Art 192 kHz/24-Bit Burr Brown DAC
This top-quality digital-to-analog converter utilizes Burr-Brown’s enhanced
multi-level delta-sigma architecture, which employs 4th-order noise shaping
and 8-level amplitude quantization to achieve excellent dynamic performance
and improved tolerance to clock jitter.
Passes PLUGE Signals
Even small black-level errors will subtly deteriorate picture quality. But if a
correct setting is achieved, there will be no adverse effects while viewing
because there is no below-black video on normal DVDs. That’s why the DV-S555
can pass PLUGE (Picture Line Up Generation Equipment) signals, a widely used
test pattern that makes it easy to accurately calibrate the black-level of a
monitor to the DVD player.
Quick-Start DVD Play
The precision transport system, designed to provide unusually swift response,
loads a DVD and displays the DVD’s menu faster than virtually any other player
available today.
Subwoofer Output
Extremely rare on a DVD player—it’s here so even those without a stereo
system can hookup a powered subwoofer and enjoy dynamic movie sound
from just their TV.
One of the Best DVD-Player Buys in the History of DVD
An extraordinary entertainment machine! This solid, feature-packed, entry-level single DVD player grew out of Onkyo’s belief that movie and
music lovers shouldn’t have to spend a bundle to enjoy high-end performance. Along with incorporating many of the same components and
circuit layout as its more expensive siblings, the DV-S555 builds on its forebears’ strengths to deliver picture precision and sound realism
unknown at this price. It also offers an outstanding feature package rare for this class of DVD player, including MP3 playback, and is
sonically matched to Onkyo’s digital surround TX-DS696, TX-DS595 and TX-DS494 receivers. Ideal for home-theater buffs who favor
performance over frills.
