Samsung Group is one of the largest conglomerates in the world of business with a lot of units that are engaged in the fields of microelectronics, chemical industry, heavy industry, construction, finances, entertainment and recreation. It is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. Such companies as Samsung in South Korea are called “chaebol”. Chaebol means a large financial-industrial group, primarily belonging to one family closely connected with government circles.
A leading division of Samsung is considered to be Samsung Electronics, the world-renowned manufacturer of LCD panels, DVD players, mobile phones, memory, phones, iPods.
Samsung was founded in Taegu, Korea, in March 1, 1938. Its founder was an entrepreneur Byung-Chull Lee (1910-1987), whose start-up capital was only 30,000 won ($2,000). Samsung translated from Korean means “three stars”. On first company’s logos these three stars were presented in different variations.
The creator of Samsung Byung-Chull Lee became one of the most prominent and most respected businesman in Korea. In 1991 there was established a Korean Ho-am Prize funded by Samsung and named after Byung-chull Lee. Ho-Am was his pen name which meant “filling up a space with clear water as lakes do, and being unshakeable as a large rock”. The Prize is an annual award to ethnical Koreans for outstanding achievements in the fields of science and culture contributing to the benefit of mankind. The Ho-Am Prize is often considered as the Korean equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
The company experienced a rebirth in 1951. After the war and predatory actions of the warring parties business was completely destroyed, but it was not possible to crack down the spirit of a businessman. Having started all over again Byung-Chull Lee revived the company and reached even greater welfare than before in just one year. The sphere of his interests was very wide: production of sugar, wool, different consumer goods, retail, insurance, broadcasting, publishing business, security trading.
The 1960s brought an unprecedented success to Samsung. With the idea to restore the economy the Korean government conducted a policy contributing to the development of large national companies. The state subsidized, supported and helped the selected corporations in every possible way, and in fact created for them more preferable conditions with no competition. The Samsung founder has managed to establish contacts with the government and his corporation has been provided unlimited opportunities for growth and expansion.
In the 1970s Samsung entered a promising market of semiconductors which was rapidly growing. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has been initiated with several smaller units of Samsung Group, engaged in electronics. In 1969 Samsung-Sanyo unit produced the first batch of black-and-white televisions. 5 years later the company commenced to make refrigerators and washing machines. In 5 years more it started the release of microwave ovens and air conditioners. In the 1980s Samsung entered the market of personal computers. In 1991 the first Samsung mobile phone was developed, and in 1999 - the first smartphone. 1998 was a start of mass production of digital TVs, which have been developed in the research center of the company. Year after year Samsung was expanding its presence in the global market, holding the first place in sales of mobile phones and televisions.
In 1993 the company was 55. It was that year when a new Samsung logo appeared, a tilted blue ellipse with the inscription “Samsung” inside.
Today the head of the corporation is Lee Kun-hee, the son of the founder. Having taken charge of the head after his father’s death Lee Kun-hee did a lot for Samsung to achieve great success in the modern world. He has given up the idea of mass production of goods of low, the so-called budget quality, and the company has focused on producing innovative products of high class, anticipating market trends.
