General

Designed for melting capping compound, paraffin and similar materials, compound
melting pots feature adjustable thermostat to deliver close temperature control
automatically from 100 to 320°F (37.8 to 160°C). Includes cover, pilot light, 6’ (1.8m)
3- conductor grounded cord set. Inner pot is cast aluminum encased in a metal jacket
with fiberglass and air insulation, keeping heat loss to a minimum. Replaceable heating
elements are securely clamped to the bottom and sides of the crucible for even heat
distribution. Meets ASTM C617; AASHTO T231.
Operating Instruction
1. Carefully unpack and check for damage in shipping. Save original packing until

set-up is complete. Notify Humboldt Mfg. Co. or your local agent and file a
claim with any carriers involved if you find any damage to the melting pot.

2. Plug unit into an outlet that supplies the correct power (check tag for requirements).
3. If supplied with a timer:

a. Plug timer into outlet with correct power.
b. Set timer so that melting pot turns on 2 hours before arrival and turns-off at the
end of the work day.
c. Never leave a melting pot unattended after desired melting point is achieved.
d. Plug melting pot into timer.

4. Consult supplier of material to be melted for the correct melting temperature. Do

not set controls over that temperature.

5. Keep cover in place. This speeds the melting time and conserves electricity.
6. When using melting pot, wear protective eyewear and clothing.
7. If a problem or question should arise, contact the appropriate vendor.
Service Instruction
1. These melting pots have three basic circuit components:

a. Heating element which is factory service only.
b. Thermostat with 100 to 320°F range, SST bulb & capillary.
c. High limits: the 4-12 quart use 1, and the 20-28 quart use 2.

2. In-case of heating failure a test to ascertain the cause is:

If the heating light is on then the high limit (non-resetable fusible link) is open;
If the heating light is off the thermostat is open.

3. To replace the high limit, place the melting pot upside down, then

a. Loosen 5/16 nut.
b. Remove base from shell.
c. Locate thermostat sending unit under sheet metal clamp.
d. The high limit is also under this clamp.
e. Trim high limit wires 4” from either side of this clamp.
f. Loosen clamp and remove old high limits.
g. Replace with new high limits.
h. Connect the ends of wire with ceramic wire nuts provided.
i. Replace insulation and base.
j. Tighten nut.
k. Place into service.
