Material Calculations
The following calculations are based on common
industry standards (see “
Default Values for
Materials
”) for estimating quantities of materials.
You may need to adjust your calculations if you use
values other than specified. Also, remember to factor
in a waste allowance when ordering materials.

Finding Cost of Materials
You can use the ProjectCalc to determine the total
cost of a project, if you know the material’s cost per
unit. See the following examples.
Cost of Paint
How many gallons of paint will you need to cover
four (4) walls, if they each measure 10' x 8'? If the
paint costs $21.97 per gallon, what is the total cost?

Dimension Keys
Entering Square or Cubic
To label a dimension as “square” or “cubic,” enter the
value, then press the desired unit (of measure) key
twice for square and three times for cubic. For exam-
ple, to enter 25 cubic yards, press 25 [Yds] [Yds] [Yds].
[Yds] — Yards Key
Enters or converts to
yards.
[Feet] — Feet Key
Enters or converts to feet as whole or decimal
numbers. Also used with the [Inch] and [/] keys
for entering Feet-Inch values (e.g., 6 [Feet] 9
[Inch] 1 [/] 2). Repeated presses during conver-
sions toggle between Feet-Inch and Decimal Feet.
[Inch] — Inch Key
Enters or converts to
inches. Entry can be whole
or decimal numbers. Also used with the [/] key for
entering fractional inch values (e.g., 9 [Inch] 1 [/]
2). Repeated presses during conversions toggle
between Fractional and Decimal Inches.
[Met] — Meter Key
Enters or converts to
Meters.
[ / ] — Fraction Bar Key
Used to enter fractions. Fractions can be entered
as proper (1/2, 1/8, 1/16) or improper (3/2, 9/8).
Fraction Resolution
Your calculator is set to display fractional values to
the nearest 16th of an inch. 1/64 resolution can be
displayed by pressing [/] with the value in the dis-
play. The fractional resolution of the calculator can
be permanently set by pressing [Conv] [/] with a
clear (zero) display. Repeat presses of the [/] will
then revolve through the available settings: 1/16,
1/32, 1/64, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8.
