Chapter 5. Symptom-to-FRU Index

The Symptom-to-FRU index lists error symptoms and possible causes. The most likely cause is listed first.
Always begin with Chapter 4, “General Checkout” on page 11. This index can also be used to help you
decide which FRUs to have available when servicing a computer. If you are unable to correct the problem
using this index, go to “Undetermined problems”.

Power Supply Problems

If you suspect a power problem, use the following procedures.

Check/Verify

FRU/Action

Check the following for proper installation.
• Power Cord
• On/Off Switch connector
• On/Off Switch Power Supply connector
• System Board Power Supply connectors
• Microprocessor(s) connection

Reseat connectors

Check the power cord for continuity.

Check the power-on switch for continuity.

Power-on Switch

Undetermined problems

If this computer has a parallel ATA hard disk drive, make sure that the hard disk drive is jumpered as a
master and the optical drive is jumpered as a slave.
1. Power-off the computer.
2. Remove or disconnect the following components (if installed) one at a time.

a. External devices (modem, printer, or mouse)
b. Any adapters
c. Memory modules
d. Extended video memory
e. External Cache
f. External Cache RAM
g. Hard disk drive
h. Diskette drive

3. Power-on the computer to re-test the system.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until you find the failing device or adapter.
If all devices and adapters have been removed, and the problem continues, replace the system board.
