Product Familiarisation
Unpacking Your Tool
• Carefully unpack and inspect your tool. Fully familiarise yourself with all its features
and functions
• Ensure that all parts of the tool are present and in good condition. If any parts are
missing or damaged, have such parts replaced before attempting to use this tool
Operating Instructions
Before you use your planer, it is recommended that you practice on a scrap piece of
material. The settings of the machine are crucial to achieving a good quality finish, and
your work could easily be damaged by using an incorrect setting.
Chamfering
• The Sole Plate (19) features a Chamfer Groove (21) to allow for 45˚
chamfer cuts to the edge of a workpiece
• To cut a chamfer, locate the edge to be cut in the groove in the sole plate.
Cut as usual, holding the planer at 45˚
Rebating
• The Rebate Depth Gauge (15) and Guide Fence (13) enable you to work parallel to an
edge and form an accurate rebate
• The brass screw holes on either side of the planer body (front of tool) are for fitting the
rebate depth gauge and guide fence
Fitting the rebate depth gauge
1. Use a T-Grip Screw (12) to fit the Rebate Depth Gauge (15) into position
on left of planer body (when viewed from the front)
2. Ensure the gauge fits in the groove in the planer body
3. Set the required rebate depth using the scale on the rebate guide and the
arrow marked on the housing
Fitting the guide fence
1. Use the other T-grip screw to fit the Guide Fence Angle Bracket (11) into
position on right of planer body (when viewed from the front)
2. Ensure the bracket fits in the groove in the planer body
3. Use the bolt and wing nut to fix the Guide Fence (13) to the angle bracket
4. Ensure the square shoulder of the bolt is completely engaged within the
square opening in the angle bracket and that the bracket is fitted within
the raised profile of the guide fence
5. Adjust the position of the fence to provide the required cutting width
Cutting the rebate
1. Set the cutting depth and start planing until you reach the required rebate
depth
2. Keep the guide fence tight up against the edge of the workpiece during
every pass
3. A better result is achieved if a series of shallow cuts are made, in
preference to one deep cut
Changing blades
WARNING: Take great care, and do not touch the cutting edge of the blades with your
fingers.
• The blades fitted on your planer have two cutting sides and are
reversible. To reverse the blades or fit new blades:
1. Use the Spanner (9) to loosen the three Clamp Bolts (17) securing the
blade assembly approx. half a turn clockwise
2. Holding the Blade Clamp (18) in position, gently slide the blade out of the
blade clamp. Use a piece of wood or similar to push the blade smoothly
3. NOTE: Do not remove the blade clamp as this can change the factory
settings for the cutting depth adjustment. Also do not adjust the height
adjusting screws
4. Depress the Guard (20) to slide the blade completely out of the clamp
5. Reverse the blade or use a new blade, then depress the guard to slide
the blade - in the correct orientation - back into the blade clamp
6. Check the edge of the blade aligns with the side of the sole plate
7. Tighten all bolts equally
8. Before connecting to power, rotate the drum by hand to check that it
does not snag
Fitting a drive belt
A spare Drive Belt (10) is included with your planer. To fit the belt:
1. Undo the screws and remove the Drive Belt Cover (7)
2. Remove the failed belt and clean any debris from the belt pulleys and
surrounding area
3. Fit the belt over the small pulley then, rotating the large pulley with one
hand, use the other hand to push the belt onto the large pulley
4. Replace the drive belt cover and re-fit the screws so that the cover is
secured firmly in position
Replacing the brushes
• Over time, the carbon brushes in the motor will wear away. This wear
process will be accelerated if the machine is used in dusty environments
or if the machine is overloaded
• If the brushes have become excessively worn, motor performance may
decrease; the machine may fail to start, or excessive sparking may occur
• A spare set of Brushes (8) is included with your planer.
To fit the replacement brushes:
1. Unfasten the screws and remove the Machine Casing (2). You will see the
housings for the brushes on either side of the central core
2. Use the blade of a screwdriver, carefully lever up one of the brush
housings, remove the worn brush and replace with the new brush in
position
3. Repeat the procedure to replace the other worn brush. NOTE: If a brush
need replacing, always replace both brushes
4. Replace the machine casing and re-fit the screws so that the casing is
secured firmly in position
5. When in doubt about changing brushes, have them replaced at an
authorised service centre
Maintenance
WARNING: Ensure the tool is disconnected from the mains power supply before carrying
out any maintenance.
Cleaning
• Keep your machine clean at all times. Dirt and dust will cause internal parts to wear
quickly, shortening the machine’s service life. Clean the body of your machine with a
soft brush, or dry cloth. If available, use clean, dry, compressed air to blow through the
ventilation holes
Disposal
• Do not dispose of power tools, or other waste electrical and electronic equipment, with
household waste
• Contact your local waste disposal authority for information on the correct way to
dispose of tools
