NOTE
If a hot oil bath is used to heat the bearings, both the
oil and the container must be absolutely clean. If
the oil has been previously used, it must be thor
oughly filtered.
NOTE
Inspect the inboard bearing (15) to determine if it is
designed with a ball loading groove. If a loading
groove exists, position the bearing on the shaft as
indicated by the following illustration.

Heat the bearings to a uniform temperature no
higher than 250
_F (120_C) and slide the bearings
onto the shaft, one at a time, until they are fully
seated. This should be done quickly, in one con
tinuous motion, to prevent the bearings from cool
ing and sticking on the shaft.
After the bearings have been installed and allowed
to cool, check to ensure that they have not moved
away from the shaft shoulders in shrinking. If
movement has occurred, use a suitably sized
sleeve and a press to reposition the bearings
against the shaft shoulders.
If heating the bearings is not practical, use a suit
ably sized sleeve and an arbor (or hydraulic) press
to install the bearings on the shaft.
When installing the bearings onto the
shaft, never press or hit against the outer
race, balls, or ball cage. Press only on the
inner race.
Install the gasket (34) and secure the bearing cap
to the pedestal with capscrews (13).
Slide the shaft and assembled bearings into the
pedestal until the inboard bearing seats against
the inboard bearing cap.
When installing the shaft and bearings into
the bearing bore, push against the outer
race. Never hit the balls or ball cage.
Position the oil seal (14) in the bearing cap (35) with
the lip positioned as shown in Figure 1. Press the
oil seal into the bearing cap until the face is just
flush with the outer surface of the bearing cap.
Install the same thickness of bearing adjusting
shims (29) and the bearing cap gasket (21) Secure
the bearing cap to the pedestal with capscrews
(23).
Position the oil seal (24) in the bearing cap (22) with
the lip positioned as shown in Figure 1. Press the
oil seal into the bearing cap until the face is just
flush with the outer surface of the bearing cap. Use
caution not to roll the lip of the oil seal during instal
lation.
NOTE
Shaft endplay should be .002 to .010 inch (0,05 to
0,25 mm). Add or remove bearing adjusting shims
to obtain this endplay.
Install the shaft key (25) and slinger ring (36).
