Is ZONING an ANSI standard?
The Fibre Channel ANSI standards do not include ZONING. ZONING was developed to build
additional value and differentiation into their offerings.
Why is this service a software service, wouldn't the zones be more stable in
hardware?
ZONING was implemented in the software to maintain switch independence. The Fabric
retains the ZONING specification in two ways:
• Information persists until it is deleted or changed.
• ZONING information is recorded in a switch’s flash memory, which has battery
backup.
