TROUBLESHOOTING
A
warning
Before performing any type of maintenance/service, disengage all
controls and stop the engine. Wait until all moving parts have come to
a complete stop. Disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against the
engine to prevent unintended starting. Always wear safety glasses during
operation or while performing any adjustments or repairs.

Problem Cause Remedy
Engine fails to start 1. Throttle lever not in correct starting position 1. Move throttle lever to START/RUN position.
2. Choke not in the CHOKE position 2. Move CHOKE to the CHOKE position.
3. Spark plug wire disconnected 3. Connect wire to spark plug.
4. Faulty spark plug 4. Clean, adjust gap, or replace.
5. Fuel tank empty or stale fuel 5. Fill tank with clean, fresh gasoline.
6. Cannot pull recoil cord 6. Obstruction lodged in impeller. Disconnect spark
plug wire and remove lodged object.
7. Engine flooded 7. Wait a tew minutes to restart.
Engine runs erratically 1. Unit running on CHOKE 1. Move choke lever to the RUN position.
2. Spark plug wire loose 2. Connect and tighten spark plug wire.
3. Stale fuel 3. Fill tank with fresh gasoline.
4. Water or dirt in fuel system 4. Refill with fresh fuel.
5. Dirty air cleaner 5. Clean or replace air cleaner filter.
6. Low engine RPM 6. Always run engine at full throttle.
7. Carburetor out of adjustment 7. Contact your Sears Parts & Repair Center.
Engine overheats 1. Engine oil level low 1. Fill engine with proper amount and type of oil.
2. Airflow restricted 2. Clean debris from around the engine’s cooling fins
and blower housing.
Engine hesitates at high RPMs 1. Spark plug gap set too close 1. Remove spark plug and adjust gap.
Engine idles poorly 1. Fouled spark plug 1. Replace spark plug and adjust gap.
2. Dirty air cleaner 2. Replace air cleaner cartridge.
Excessive vibration 1. Loose parts or damaged impeller 1. Stop engine immediately and disconnect spark plug
wire. Contact your Sears Parts & Repair Center.
Unit does not discharge 1. Chute deflector clogged 1. Stop engine immediately and disconnect spark
plug wire. Clean flail screen and inside of discharge
opening.
2. Foreign object lodged in impeller
2. Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire.
Remove lodged object.
3. Low engine RPM
3. Always run engine at full throttle.
Rate of discharge slows 1. Low engine RPM 1. Always run engine at full throttle.
