Sending Distress Message
After receiving the distress alert
acknowledgment from an LES and you have
the time, you may send a distress message,
which provides detailed distress information.
1. Press the [F1] and [1] keys to display the
editor screen.
2. Type MAYDAY three times at the top of
the message, followed by ship’s name,
type of assistance required and other
information that may aid in rescue. The
illustration below shows a sample
distress message.

3. Press the [F3] key.
4. Press the [1] key. The cursor is selecting
Priority.

5. Press the [Enter] key to open the priority
options window.
6. Press the [
↓
] key to choose “Distress.”
7. Press the [Enter] key to close the
window.
8. Press the [
↓
] key to choose LES ID.
9. Press the [Enter] key to open the LES
list.
10. Choose an LES, preferably the one
where the distress alert was transmitted.
11. Press the [Enter] key to close the LES
list.
12. Press the [
↓
] key to choose TRANSMIT.
13. Press the [Enter] key twice to transmit
the distress message.
Note: Country/Ocean Code and Station ID
are not required in a distress message.
While the distress message is being
transmitted, the message “Distress Message
Call Activated” appears, the alarm sounds
and the lamp in the [DISTRESS] button
lights. When you receive acknowledgement
of the distress message from an LES, the
message “Distress Message Call
Acknowledged” appears, the alarm sounds
intermittently and the lamp in the button
flashes.
