Glossary
Ripple pattern
One of the test patterns produced by this printer. In this test, all characters
are printed in the default font and pitch (as determined by the printer
control mode that has been selected) in a repeating pattern.
ROM
Read Only Memory. You cannot modify this printer memory. When the
printer is turned off, ROM memory remains intact. In this printer, the
default settings and the resident fonts are stored in ROM.
Roman
A font based on the characters used by the Romans, with serifs and long
strokes. By extension, an upright (nonitalic) font.
S
Sans Serif font
A font in which the characters do not have serifs as embellishments. The
Sans Serif font is available in Epson LQ mode only. It can be printed either
in fixed pitch or proportionally spaced.
Serif
Short lines crossing and embellishing the ends of a letter’s main strokes.
Serif font
A font in which the letters have serifs as embellishments. Courier and
Prestige are serif fonts.
Smoothing mode
A printer mode in which the printer enhances the horizontal resolution
from 360 dpi to 720 dpi. This function is active when FUNCTION 6 is ON.
Subscript
One or more characters printed one-half line below the normal printing
line. See also Superscript.
Superscript
One or more characters printed one-half line above the normal printing
line. See also Subscript.
T
Text scale mode
The mode that reduces the line spacing by a factor of 14/15 (from 62 lines
per page to 66 lines per page if line spacing is set to 6 lines per inch). This
provides compatibility with software that assumes 66 lines will fit on each
page.
TrueType font
The scalable font technology built into Microsoft Windows 3.1. It offers you
the same font images both on computer displays and printer outputs.
