Setting Recording Quality
You can select between two
recording qualities. Default is HQ.
Definition
• SP (Standard Play) -
This player allows about 26 hours
recording.
• HQ (High Quality) -
This player allows about 4 hours
recording.
1. Press MENU untill
SP or HQ show on

Setting Recording
Condition
You can select between two
recording conditions. Default is DICT.
Definition
• CONF (Conference) - in a more
open area and recording source is
far from the player.
• DICT (Dictation) - in a more
enclosed area and recording
source is close to the player.

Setting Recording Mode
You can select between two
recording modes - manual recording
and AVR (automatic voice recording).

1. In STOP mode,
select folder
(A/B/C/D).
2. Press RECORD to
start recording.
(recording time will
be displayed once
you press RECORD)
3. To pause recording,
you can press
RECORD once,
press again to
resume recording.
4. To stop recording, press STOP.
2. AVR (Automatic Voice
Recording)
This feature allows the player to
sense sound and to record only
when you are speaking into the
microphone. When dictation stops
for about three seconds, recording
will stop and then start again
automatically when you resume
dictation.
1. Select destination folder
(A/B/C/D).
2. Press MENU untill AVR flashes on
display.
3. Press REVERSE or FORWARD to
select between AVR on and AVR
off.
4. Press STOP to
confirm your
selection and exit
to STOP mode.
5. Press RECORD to
enter AVR mode.
6. During AVR on recording, adjust
the sensitivity of the microphone
by pressing VOL UP and VOL
DOWN, SEN with sensitivity level
will show on display (e.g. increase
sensitivity level when recording
source is far from the player or
the recording envionment is
quiet.).
7. Start dictation. Recording starts
automatically.
8. Press STOP to end AVR recording.
9. Repeat step 2-3 and select AVR
OFF for de-selection.
Year/Date/12/24/Time
Setting
With this function, you can always
read on the display the recording
date and time of your recorded
messages. Follow the steps below for
time setting.
You can still use this player for
normal recording without setting
the time. However, no correct
recording date and time can be
referred for your recorded messages.
1. Turn on the player.
2. Press MENU repeatedly to enter
Time setting mode.
3. When “YEAR” shows, the digits
of the year flashes
(default is 2007).
Press REVERSE or
FORWARD to
increase/decrease
the number, press
MENU to confirm.
4. Once the year is entered , the
digits in the month
field will flash
(default is 1). Press
REVERSE or
FORWARD to
increase/decrease
the number, press MENU to
confirm.
5. Once the month is entered, the
digits in the day will flash. Press
REVERSE or FORWARD to
increase/decrease the number,
press MENU to confirm.
6. Once the date is
entered, you can
select between
12/24 hour clock
display by pressing
REVERSE
/FORWARD, then press MENU to
confirm.
7. Once the time
format is entered,
the digits in the
hour field will flash
(default setting is
12 (12 hour mode)
& 0 (24 hour mode). Press

Power supply
This player can be operated by 2
“AAA” batteries.
Installing Batteries
(not included)
1. Slide the battery compartment
door to open.
2. Insert the two supplied “AAA”
batteries with polarities matching
indications.
3. Replace the battery compartment
door.
Refer to the battery level
indicator on display for
batteries level. Replace with new
batteries when the indicator is
empty.
Auto power shut down
The player will be automatically
turned off if left idle for three
minutes.
Using earphones and
external microphone
• When earphones are connected,
sound output from speaker will
be muted.
• When external microphone is
connected, no record can be
made from built-in microphone.
Starting up the player
Press and hold PLAY to turn on the
player.
Keys lock
This feature avoids accidental key
activation during recording or
playback.
1. Press and hold MENU for three
seconds, LOCKED will flashes on
display. (LOCK icon will be
shown)
2. Press and hold MENU for three
seconds again to unlock keys.
Tones
You can activate this feature so that
beep sound can be heard whenever
you press on any button except
during playback and recording.

until TONE shows on display.

Using the Digital Voice
Manager
The RCA Digital Voice Manager can
perform playback, organize your
bookmarks of the recorded files and
create self-executable voice file from
the recorded files.
Launching the Software
1. To launch the software, click
"Start", select "All Programs",
select "Digital Voice Recorder",
then select "RP5022" and then
select "Digital Voice Manager".
2. All the drives in the computer
except the removable Digital
Voice Recorder are shown in the
top while the removable Digital
Voice Recorder is shown in the
bottom.
Playback and Editing Operations
1. To organize your files, click the
corresponding buttons to cut,
delete, copy and paste a file(or by
drag and drop).
2. To play the recorded files,
highlight the file and click the
PLAY/PAUSE button on the left
of the toolbar.
3. Adjust the volume on the right of
the toolbar.
• Click the corresponding buttons
in the toolbar to fast
backward/forward, skip to a
specific time in the file and stop
playback of a recorded file.
• To adjust the playback speed, click
"Normal Speed" and select
desired speed from the pull down
menu.

increase/decrease the number,
press MENU to confirm.
8. Once the hour field is entered,
the digits in the minute field will
flash. Press REVERSE or
FORWARD to increase/decrease
the number, press STOP to
confirm your selection and exit to
Menu mode.

• Do not use the unit immediately

condensation problem may be

during recording. Recorded data
can be damaged.
• Do not store the unit near fire,
places with high temperature or

• Do not operate or store unit in
places with frequent static
electricity or electrical noise (e.g.
speaker, TV set).
• Clean the unit with a soft cloth or
a damp chamois leather. Never

qualified personnel.

Precautions for Batteries
• If you do not use the unit for
more than one month, be sure to
remove the batteries to avoid
leakage.
• When installing batteries, be sure
that the polarities are correct.
Reversing polarity may cause
personal injury and damage to
the batteries.
• Never mix new batteries with old
ones. Do not mix battery types.
• Discard leaking batteries
immediately. Leaking batteries
can cause skin burns or other

Select folder
You can select a specific folder
(A/B/C/D) for browsing. Default is
folder A.
1. Press MENU in stop
mode.
2. Folder A, B, C or D
icon will flash.
3. Press REVERSE or
FORWARD to
select a folder.
4. Press STOP to exit
to stop mode in
the desired folder.
Select file
You can select a specific file for
playback.
1. Select the folder you need.
2. Press REVERSE or FORWARD to
select the file you want. If the file
you want is in the current folder,
you can press REVERSE or
FORWARD to select it directly in
stop and play mode.
Normal Playback
1. In Stop mode,
select a folder
(A/B/C/D).
2. Select file by
pressing REVERSE
or FORWARD.
3. Press PLAY to start playback.
4. Press PLAY to pause playback,
press again to resume.
5. You can press VOL UP (+) or VOL
DOWN (-) to adjust listening
volume.
6. Press and hold REVERSE or
FORWARD to make quick search
within a file.
7. Press REVERSE or FORWARD
once to skip one file forward or
backward.
8. Press STOP to stop playback.
Creating a bookmark
This feature allows you to create an
interception point in the recorded
message for quick reference.
1. During playback, press REC once
to set a bookmark, the bookmark
icon flashes on the display.
2. You can create multiple
bookmarks until the memory is
full.
Skipping to a bookmark
You can skip to a bookmark anytime
during playbcak.
1. During playback, press FORWARD
to go to the bookmark (if
available).
2. Press FORWARD again to go to
the next bookmark.
Deleting a bookmark
1. Select folder (A/B/C/D)
2. Select file.
3. Press ERASE once and DELETE
will flash on the screen.
4. Press and hold PLAY for 3 seconds
to confirm deleting. (or press
STOP to cancel erasing file)

Transfer Files with the
Digital Voice Manager
(Voice Files Only)
Your player is associated with a drive
letter. You can drag the voice files
you want to transfer to your player
to the A/B/C/D folder in the drive.
Your files can be found in these
folders in the player once it is
disconnected from the computer.
You can also drag the voice files you
want to transfer from the A/B/C/D
folder in the drive to your computer.
Using your player as a file
storage device
The player can function as a
detachable data storage device. You
can take along your favorite pictures
and documents wherever you go.
Simply cut-and-paste or drag-and-
drop files to or from it via USB
connection, the player will appear as
a removable drive in Windows
Explorer.
Disconnecting from the
Computer
After you have copied files to or
from the player, you can disconnect
the player from the computer.
1. Click the icon from the
System Tray and select "Unplug or
Eject hardware". Select the drive
corresponding to your player.
2. The "Stop a Hardware player"
screen will appear. Select the
player to be stopped again for
confirmation and click OK.
3. Now you can disconnect the
player from the computer. If you
want to go back to USB mode for
file transfer at this stage, you
need to unplug and connect the
player to the PC again.
What your warranty covers:
• Defects in materials or workmanship.
For how long after your purchase:
• One year from date of purchase.
The warranty period for rental units begins with the first rental or 45 days from
date of shipment to the rental firm, whichever comes first.
What we will do:
• Provide you with a new, or at our option, a refurbished unit. The exchange unit
is under warranty for the remainder of the original product’s warranty period.
• Proof of purchase in the form of a bill of sale or receipted invoice which is
evidence that the product is within the warranty period must be presented to
obtain warranty service. For rental firms, proof of first rental is also required.
How to make a warranty claim:
• Properly pack your unit. Include any cables, etc., which were originally provided
with the product. We recommend using the original carton and packing
materials.
• Include evidence of purchase date such as the bill of sale. Also print your name
and address and a description of the defect. Send via standard UPS or its
equivalent to:

• Customer instruction. (Your Owner’s Manual provides information regarding

Cut
You can erase unwanted parts from
your recording.
1. Select folder.
2. Select file.
3. Start playback of
the file with the
unwanted part.
4. Press ERASE to
mark the start of
the unwanted
part, “CUT-S”
shows on display.
5. Press ERASE to
mark the end of
the unwanted part, “CUT-E”
shows on display.
6. Press ERASE again to confirm
cutting (or press STOP to cancel)
7. “WAIT” will show on the display.
8. When the memory
rearrangement is completed, the
player will continue playback.
Format
(Caution! All data inside the memory
will be erased)
You can format the internal memory
when needed. (e.g. compatability
problem, etc.)

Installing the Digital Voice
Manager
1. Turn on your computer and
insert the Digital Voice
Management CD into the CD
drive.
2. If the setup screen does not
appear, double-click My
Computer, double click your CD
drive icon, and double click
"Install" to run the installer.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions
to install the software. If your
computer is running Windows
98SE, the installer will install the
USB driver automatically for
recognizing the player.
4. After installation is completed,
reboot your computer.
Connecting to the
Computer
Connect the player before launching
the Digital Voice Manager.
1. Connect the USB cable provided
to the player's USB jack and
connect the other end to your
computer's USB port.
2. "PCLINK" shows on the player's
display. The player appears as a
removable drive in your
computer.
4. To skip to a bookmark, select
"Play" from the menu at the top,
then select "Goto Bookmark" and
select your desired bookmark.
• To edit bookmarks, click the
corresponding buttons to add or
clear the bookmarks.
Creating and Playing
Self-executable File
You can play the created file
independently without the Digital
Voice Management software.
1. Highlight a recorded file, click
.
2. Select the destination folder from
the pop up window and click
"Save".
3. Go to the destination folder and
double-click the created file.
4. Click "Play" to start playback.
Adjust the volume on the right.
Creating Wave File
Self-executable file may be blocked
by some e-mail filters. You may
select to create wave file if you want
to send your recorded message by
e-mail.
1. Highlight a recorded file, click
.
2. Select the destination folder from
the pop up window and click
"Save".
3. The created file could be found in
the destination folder.
Player doesn’t turn on
• Check that batteries are properly
inserted and not exhausted.
• Make sure battery compartment
door is properly closed.
• Make sure LOCK function is not
activated.
Display keeps flashing when
player is off
• You may not have set the time.
Refer to section on Time Setting.
Cannot record
• Make sure LOCK function is not
activated.
• Make sure memory is not full.
• You have recorded 99 files in one
folder. Try record in a new folder.
• If you select external memory,
please ensure that an external
memory card is properly inserted.
Cannot show recording date and
time during playback
• You may have not set the date
and time before recording. Refer
to section ‘Time Setting’.
No sound from speaker during
playback
• Make sure volume is not set to 0.
• Headphones should not be
connected.
Cannot edit
• Make sure LOCK function is not
activated.
Cannot activate the player after
pressing on keys
• There may be software problems.
Remove the batteries to reset the
player.
Recordable time becomes shorter
• You may have set the recording
quality to ‘High Quality’, refer to
section ‘Setting Recording
Quality’.
Cannot perform playback
• Make sure you have selected
folder with recorded messages.
• Make sure LOCK function is not
activated.
Cannot erase recorded file(s)
• Make sure you follow each step
under section “Erasing Selected
File” carefully.
Cannot stop recording when AVR
ON
• If AVR ON sensitivity is set to
HIGH, recording may not be
stopped in noisy environment. Try
setting the sensitivity to LOW.
Cannot keep the saved setting
• If the batteries are removed,
saved settings may be removed.
• Products which have been modified or incorporated into other products.
• Products purchased or serviced outside the USA.
• Acts of nature, such as but not limited to lightning damage.

You can insert new segments into a
file without erasing previously
recorded content.

2. Select file for inserting new
segment.
3. Press PLAY to start
playback. Press

FORWARD to scan
to the point that
you want to insert
new segment.
4. Press MENU twice to start
recording new segment, “INSERT”
will be shown on display. Press
RECORD within three seconds.
5. Press STOP to stop recording.
Append
You can add appendix (e.g.
reminder, supplementary
information) to the end of the file.
1. Select folder.
2. Select file for
adding appendix.
3. Press PLAY to start
playback.
4. Press MENU three
times, “APPEND”
will be shown on
display. Press RECORD within
three seconds to start recording
appendix.
5. Press STOP to stop recording.
6. “WAIT” will show on the display.
7. After the memory rearrangement
completed, the player will go to
STOP mode.

Erasing selected file
You can delete a file by the
following steps:
1. Select folder (A/B/C/D)
2. Select file.
3. Press ERASE once and DELETE
will flash on the screen.
4. Press and hold ERASE for three
seconds to confirm deleting. (or
press STOP to cancel erasing file)
Erasing all files in a folder
You can delete all files in a specific
folder by the following steps:
1. Turn on the player.
2. Select a folder (A/B/C/D).
3. In Stop mode, press FORWARD
continuously until “ALL” appears
on the display.
4. Press ERASE and “DELETE” will
flash on the display.
5. Press and hold ERASE for about
three seconds, all files in the

Tip:
• You can record up to 99 files
in one folder, not exceeding
396 files in total. When the
maximum limit is reached,
“FULL” will be shown.
• The first syllable or two may be
lost when you start recording
because this ‘sound’ is used to
turn on the AVR feature. It is a
good pratice to make some
‘sounds’ or say a short word to
activate the AVR before you
begin actual dictation.
• To view the remaining time
and other recording
information, you may press and

Before You Begin
Tip:
• For conferences, to obtain
optimum recording quality,
place the recorder with the
microphone freely exposed to
the sound source as close as
convenient. A built-in
automatic recording level
control will set the optimum
record level during manual
recording. Avoid recording near
unwanted noise sources, such
as air conditioners or fans.
• If power supply from the
battery fails suddenly (e.g.
batteries are removed
accidentally) during recording,
the memory which is allocated
for recording could not be read
or release. To release the
memory, backup your files and
format the player.
Recording Mode
Note:
During recording, the
recording indicator lights. When in
AVR standby mode or when
recording is paused, the recording
indicator flashes.
Tip:
• Make sure play all files is not
selected. Inserting new
segments, adding appendix
and cutting cannot be
performed when play all files is
selected.
• Inserting new segments,
adding appendix and cutting
will only update the recorded
time length, without changing
recording time and date.
• All bookmarks will be deleted
after inserting new segments,
adding appendix or cutting is
performed.
